LGBTQ Spirituality: A Journey of Love, Acceptance, and Self-Discovery

Introduction

LGBTQ+ spirituality is a broad term that encompasses the diverse spiritual beliefs and practices of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer people. Gay Spirituality

Gay spirituality is a specific branch of LGBTQ+ spirituality that focuses on the unique experiences and challenges of gay men. Gay men often face discrimination and prejudice, both within and outside of the religious community. This can make it difficult for them to find a spiritual path that is affirming and supportive.

However, there is a growing movement of gay spirituality that is challenging these stereotypes and creating new spaces for gay men to connect with their spirituality. Gay spiritual leaders and teachers are drawing on a variety of sources, including traditional religious teachings, queer theory, and personal experience, to develop new ways of thinking about and practicing spirituality.

Queer Spirituality

LGBTQ+ Spirituality in Action

There are many ways that LGBTQ+ people can express their spirituality. Some LGBTQ people choose to participate in traditional religious services and rituals. Others prefer to create their own spiritual practices, such as meditation, prayer, or journaling.

What Does a Queer-Centric, Esoteric Catholic Deconstructionist Spirituality Look Like?

The Contemplative Order of Compassion was originally known as the Franciscan Companions of the Immaculata — a community of Queer Franciscans, who felt called to address the fear and discrimination being faced by people living with and dying from HIV/AIDS in the early 1980s.

Many of these people were denied contact with the outside world, and some were abandoned by their loved ones. And so the members of the Order made sure that everyone on the “AIDS Ward” as well as those released to “go home and get their affairs in order” had regular contact with at least one or two of our community members, so that they would no longer be abandoned and marginalised entirely.

Separating from the Roman Catholic Church, in 2001, the decision was made that we would take up the charism of St. Francis of Assisi, who was unafraid to call out and reject the corruption, politicisation and lack of compassion in the institutional church (and in religion in general) by becoming the first deconstructionist, queer-affirming, non-institutionalised and non-patriarchal Franciscan community and spiritual community.

We reject the Pauline and Augustinian versions of Christianity as being inconsistent with the esoteric spirituality embraced by the Rabbi Jesus of the traditional Christian mythos. Reaching back further to the spirituality of the monks of the Desert Skete, who lived a simple, contemplative life in the deserts of Egypt, Palestine, and Syria, we were inspired by the stories and sayings attributed to the Desert Fathers and Desert Mothers from approximately the 5th century of the Common Era.

For us, the historically-intact lineage or transmission of the teachings of the Palestinian Rabbi, Yeshua (Jesus) and the subsequent wisdom of the Desert Fathers and Desert Mothers, when taken holistically, and in concert with other Wisdom Traditions, forms the basis of a more fluid, authentic and compassionate expression of spirituality; one in which manipulative constructs like sin, salvation, and fear of imaginary places, like “Hell” has no place.

And so the Order would evolve into something that is truly unique.

There are practitioners who are ordained servants of the Community, and some whose practices operate outside of ordained life. Some prefer a more traditional liturgical observance and ritual, while others express their spirituality in a way that is more closely linked to the Taizé Contemplative Liturgy — created by an ecumenical Christian monastic fraternity in Taizé, Saône-et-Loire, Burgundy, France.

We are Queer-Centric

There are many spiritual traditions that respect and honour LGBTQ persons. Here are a few examples:

  • Native American spirituality: Many Native American cultures have a long history of accepting and honouring LGBTQ people. For example, the Navajo people have a third gender category called “nadle,” which is neither male nor female. Nadle people are often respected for their unique abilities and insights.
  • Hinduism: Hinduism is a diverse religion with many different traditions, but many Hindu texts and teachings affirm the equality of all people, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity. For example, the Bhagavad Gita, one of the most important Hindu texts, teaches that “all beings are equal in the eyes of God.”
  • Buddhism: Buddhism is another diverse religion with many different traditions, but many Buddhist teachings emphasize compassion and non-judgment. This has led many LGBTQ Buddhists to find a sense of acceptance and belonging in that tradition.
  • Esotericism: Most modern esotericists believe that all people are sacred, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity.
  • Queer-centric spirituality: There are also many queer-centric spiritual traditions that have emerged in recent years. These traditions are often created by and for LGBTQ people, and they offer a unique way to explore spirituality and connect with the divine.

Within the context of these historic traditions, we exist as a Queer-Centric Spiritual Sanctuary — a place for LGBTQ+ people, their allies and loved ones and those who value bodily autonomy, freedom sexual expression, liberation of all oppressed people, and those who wish to see the end of patriarchal, white supremacist, Christian nationalism and injustice.

We Recognise All of Life as Sacrament

While we have a solid foundation in Catholic Folk Spirituality, esotericism and mysticism, our view of “sacrament” is not limited to the seven traditional sacraments of Christian tradition.

The word “sacrament” comes from the Latin word “sacramentum“, which means “sacred mystery”.

In Christianity, a sacrament is a religious rite that is believed to be a visible sign of the grace of the Birther of the Cosmos.

There are many different definitions of sacrament, but they all share the following elements:

  • An outward sign: A sacrament is something that can be seen and experienced with the senses.
  • An inward grace: A sacrament is believed to be a channel of divine grace, which is a gift of the love, wisdom and presence that has been anthropomorphised by primitive cultures into the “God concept”.
  • Instituted by Christ: A sacrament is believed to have been instituted by Jesus himself in traditional religious traditions. We do not believe that Rabbi Jesus actually instituted any “sacrament”. We recognise that he, as an master of the Sacred Mysteries of Alexandria, relied on some of the ancient sacraments, often reframing them in ways that were more culturally accessible to people in the first century of the Common Era.

At the centre of our sacramental experience is the experience of Eucharist — a sacred mystery that has its roots in the Eleusinian and Dionysian Mystery Traditions. With this foundation, we recognise Eucharist as the celebration of our Sacred Unity and Oneness. As such, it becomes the centre of a wheel of sacramental experiences that are available to all people, including the sacrament of bodily autonomy, the sacrament of sexual expression, the sacrament of forgiveness, and others.

We Are An Esoteric, Folk-Magic Tradition

Folk magic practices often evolve out of the oppression, colonisation and injustices experienced by a particular people or culture.

Within the context of pre-institutional Catholicism, the Sacred Mysteries were often taught in the homes of the spiritual leaders — women, men and non-binary adepts, who understood the layers of meaning that exist in a Mystery Tradition.

As the institutional church came into being — rife with the agendas of centuries of political and religious figures — that corruption began to oppress the people.

Catholic Folk Magic isn’t a singular practice, but is an organic esoteric response to such oppression. In Mexico, it looks like Brujeria de Rancho, in Southern Italy, it expresses as Benedicaria and Segnature. It’s expressions include the Celtic tradition of home-churches, and the syncretic religious traditions of Gran Caneria in Spain.

The Contemplative Order of Compassion Sanctuary embraces an open, accessible, and unrestricted freedom of expression of one’s personally-held spiritual traditions — including freedom from religion.

We Are Deconstructionist

Cambridge Dictionary states that ‘deconstruction’ is “the act of breaking something down into its separate parts in order to understand its meaning,” and in the context of our spiritual community and core values, deconstruction is an essential component of our rich diversity of spiritual expression and the creation of a safe space for those on such a journey.

Religious or spiritual deconstruction is a term applied to the process of questioning, doubting, and ultimately rejecting aspects of Christian teaching — particularly, institutional religious doctrine, dogma and fearmongering.

Deconstructing Religion: A Journey of Questioning and Discovery

Deconstruction is the process of critically examining one’s beliefs and values. It can be a challenging and even painful process, but it can also be a liberating and empowering one.

Religious Trauma for LGBTQ Persons

Religious trauma is a form of complex trauma that can occur when an individual experiences negative, harmful, or invalidating messages about their sexual orientation or gender identity from a religious context. This can include messages from religious leaders, family members, or peers.

Religious trauma can have a profound impact on an individual’s mental health, physical health, and spiritual well-being. Symptoms of religious trauma can include:

  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Low self-esteem
  • Shame
  • Guilt
  • Dissociation
  • Substance abuse
  • Suicidal thoughts

Religious trauma can result from an event, series of events, relationships, or circumstances within or connected to religious beliefs, practices, or structures. It can be the result of indoctrination messages, coercion, humiliation, embarrassment, and abuse.

Religious trauma syndrome (RTS) occurs when an individual struggles with leaving a religion or a set of beliefs that has led to their indoctrination. It often involves the trauma of breaking away from a controlling environment, lifestyle, or religious figure.

Religious trauma can also make it difficult for individuals to connect with their spirituality or faith. It can lead to feelings of alienation, isolation, and despair.

Press Release: Alabama attempts to use Roe ruling to ban gender-affirming surgery

Gender-affirming care, reproductive rights, bodily autonomy, marriage equality, mental health care and addiction care are all enshrined by the Contemplative Order of Compassion as religious, sacramental rituals. As such they are protected under the First Amendment (Free Exercise clause).

In 1962, a New York state judge ruled that a 69-year-old Jehovah’s Witness could refuse a blood transfusion, based on religious grounds, under the First Amendment’s Free Exercise Clause.

Three years later, the Illinois Supreme Court ruled in the case of In re Estate of Brooks (1965) that a county judge’s ordered transfusion for a Jehovah’s Witness was an unconstitutional invasion of a person’s religious beliefs. In similar cases, a Milwaukee judge refused to order blood transfusions for a 6-year-old boy whose mother objected.

In Commonwealth v. David R. Twitchell and Commonwealth v. Ginger Twitchell (Mass. 1993), Massachusetts’s highest court overturned a ruling against a Christian Scientist couple, whose 2-year-old son died after their refusal to submit him to medical treatment that violated their religious beliefs.

In the Child Abuse Prevention Treatment Act of 1996, Congress legislated that there was no federal requirement that a child must be provided “medical service or treatment against the religious beliefs of the parent or legal guardian.”

This establishes a long series of historic precedents, on which the Contemplative Order of Compassion will continue to provide a safe haven for those seeking (but not limited to) the sacramental rites described above. Consistent with our core guiding principles, the Contemplative Order of Compassion Sanctuary is joining other religious institutions in taking action to address reproductive laws that violate our religious conscience by inflicting guilt and shame in one’s decision and being inconsistent with necessary health and safety standards.

Press Release – Overturn of Roe v. Wade

Harrisburg, PA

With the historic decision the Supreme Court of the United States, which is now clearly under the control of a sociopathic Christian fundamentalist religious cult, thirty-six million women and people assigned female at birth (AFAB) have been stripped of their constitutional freedoms that protect bodily autonomy, privacy and personal choice in healthcare and future.

The overturn of Roe v. Wade represents the willful destruction of a fifty-year precedent of settled law in the United States.

There is a word for when a living being has no choice over its reproductive life, we call such beings livestock, and that is what the six reprehensible and morally-bankrupt justices have chosen to treat 36 million Americans as this week.

And make no mistake. The agenda isn’t merely to attack reproductive rights, as their decision was swiftly followed with a decision that allowed concealed carry of dangerous weapons, and another decision allocating public funding to be used for private, religious schools. And this morning, the Religious Cult on the Supreme Court ruled that teachers and coaches are permitted to call for and offer prayer in public schools, moving us even closer to the Handmaid’s Tale.

Next on their agenda will surely be attacks on sexual expression, gender diversity, marriage equality and other civil rights.

It is on all of us to stand up and fight back because there IS something we can do right now.

Gaining political power is the only way to meet this challenge — and if the Supreme Court is going to leave it up to the states to decide who has control over a woman’s body, then we MUST elect people who stand for human rights, reproductive and bodily autonomy, sexual and gender diversity, and racial equality.

In the mean time, while there are organisations that are engaging lawsuits focused on due process, and other organisations, with problematic histories of anti-Semitism and other issues, who have taken up the fight based on their interpretation of the Free Exercise Clause, we recognise that there are tens of thousands of persons who do not wish to be associated with such groups for whatever reasons they have, who still require advocacy.

The Contemplative Order of Compassion has stood for reproductive freedom, bodily autonomy, sexual and gender diversity, and racial quality, as well as social justice in other areas for more than 40 years.

Presently, consistent with the Supreme Court’s ruling in Fulton v. City of Philadelphia, we maintain that states that outlaw abortion but grant exceptions for instances of incest and rape should provide a religious exception allowing members of the Contemplative Order of Compassion to perform the Sacrament of Reclaiming the Sacred Womb abortion ritual. We will have to sue those states to affirm our civil rights, but the law is clearly on our side.

The Sacrament of Reclaiming the Sacred Womb abortion ritual is a sacramental ritual for women and those assigned female at birth (AFAB) to affirm bodily autonomy, self-worth, sovereignty and healing, through a sacred abortion ritual. By sanctifying the abortion process, affirming the individual’s sovereign and sacred rights to spiritual comfort, confidence and bodily autonomy when undergoing a safe, scientific procedure under the care of a qualified medical professional, this is one of the highest sacraments offered in our church.

Where there is no exception for rape and incest, the challenges we mount will be more significant. In the meantime, unfettered access to safe and effective abortion drugs, such as Mifepristone and Misoprostol for use under medical supervision is an important next step, and ought to be immediately provided for use in our sacramental rituals. If necessary, suits will be filed against the FDA for that access.

Current Projects & Goals

As the world grapples with creating a “new normal” amidst a global health and financial crisis, the Order recognises that these difficult times will bring with them unique opportunities for us to serve our communities with compassion and care.

During our first General Assembly, the following goals and objectives were adopted, as initial steps needed to ensure our effectiveness in the world around us:

Acquisition of 501(c)3 Status

Our initial goal must include the formal acquisition of a 501(c)3 status as a non-profit foundation and “spiritual institution” (commonly referred to in the IRS code as a “church”). This will provide essential status recognition for each of our member-practitioners, in addition to opening avenues of access to the Collective for other services that will advance our abilities to serve our local communities more effectively. Such services will include acquisition and approval for an educational platform, and broadcast platform for video content.

The costs associated with filing for and getting approval of a 501(c)3 status are approximately $850.

Acquisition of a Social Networking Platform

Once 501(c)3 status is approved, we will proceed in creating a dedicated social network. Prior networks, which were little more than a blogging platform and directory, have recently dissolved due to poor design, function and management.

Because our organisation is fortunate to have one of the co-creators of the world’s first enterprise social network on our Board of Directors, we will not have those challenges.

Costs of development and implementation of that social network will be $1500/year.

Acquisition of a Podcasting and Video Broadcast Platform for our Members

Initial costs to acquire services allowing for 100 hours of broadcast video content, and 12 hours of high quality podcasting (approximately 20 different programs monthly) will be $600/year.

Conclusion and Summary

Therefore, the total financial goal for 2022 is just $3000. We believe that we can achieve this modest goal through the development of a base membership of just 50-60 charter members.

These charter members would be eligible to serve on the Collective’s Leadership Council for a period of two years, until our next General Assembly.

The Case for Spirituality as Mental Health Self-Care for Queer Folks

While the institution of the church has shut so many LGBTQ+ people out, spirituality and tradition still offer much solace for those who feel alone.

As a professional queer and social justice advocate, I never thought I’d want to champion the side of faith and spirituality. I was raised Catholic, but like far too many LGBTQ+ people, I had a brutal and painful falling-out with the church when I came out that I continue to work through.

What I’ve come to realize over the years, though, is all the ways that my life is still shaped by my upbringing in organized religion, and surprisingly to me, the benefits this continues to bring me. It was the first and most formative place that I learned leadership and community, and in many ways where I learned activism.

What has fueled my healing is a deeper understanding of the separation of church and spirituality. Many churches are similar to other institutions (education, the medical system, government, and more) in the United States that are plagued by centuries of white supremacy, colonization, puritanical sex-negativity, ableism, homophobia, and transphobia. Church and religious leaders and the institutions that they have built have no right to own my spirituality or my ability to seek support from higher powers (for me that includes gods, goddesses, gender-fluid spirit guides, and ancestors). In rejecting the institutions they made, I also cut myself off from beliefs, rituals, and practices that I actually want in my life as a queer person of color.
